U.S. Congressman. Born in Bloomingburg, Ohio, he graduated from Washington College Iowa, in 1855, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1859 and commenced to practice law in Washington, Iowa. During the Civil War, he served as a First Lieutenant in the 7th and 19th Regiments, Iowa Volunteer Infantry, Union Army. After the war, he was a member of the Iowa State House of Representatives, (1865-67) and served in the Iowa State Senate, (1867-71). Relocating to the Territory of Dakota, he was appointed associate justice of the supreme court of the Territory of Dakota, serving (1875-78). In 1879, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-sixth Congress, serving until 1881. Not a candidate for reelection, he served as judge of the probate court of Lawrence County, South Dakota and practiced law until his death at age 76 in Hot Springs, South Dakota.
