Oklahoma Governor, U.S. Senator. He graduated from Princeton University 1942 and during World War II, served as a United States Marine Corps as a dive bomber pilot in the South Pacific Theater, (1943-45). After the war he moved to Oklahoma, where he a successful oilman, farmer and rancher. He was a member of the Oklahoma State Senate, (1963-66). In 1967, he was elected as a Republican the 19th Governor of Oklahoma, serving until 1971. After his term, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving (1972-79). Not a candidate for reelection, he retired from politics and died of cancer at age 59.
