Queen Empress of Austria. Originally Duchess of the Italian aristocracy, she married Ferdinand III of Habsburg by proxy (1650) becoming Sovereign Consort of the Holy Roman Empire. The marriage was the result of political and economic interests related to the loyalty of the Duchy of Monferrato to the Emperor. According to historians, Eleonore Magdalena Gonzaga was a woman of good character and virtuous, and this contributed, together with common artistic and literary interests with her husband, to make happy the married and family life. She was also a poet and director of a Literary Academy in Vienna, and dedicated herself to the beneficence of religious institutions, including the Ursuline and Carmelite convents.
