U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Bowdoin College, in 1813, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1816 and commenced to practice law in Portland, Maine. He was a member of the Maine State Senate in 1823. In 1825, he was elected as a Jacksonian to the Nineteenth, Twentieth, Twenty-first and Twenty-second Congresses, serving until 1833. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he was Mayor of Portland, Maine, (1833-36), United States Attorney for the district of Maine, (1833-36) and collector of customs for the Port of Portland, (1837-41, 43-48). He then resumed the practice of law, until his death at age 61.
