Bolivian President. Born in Bolivia, Banzer Suarez was twice president of that country. In 1971, he organized a military coup and took full control of the country as dictator. During his dictatorship that ran from 1971 to 1978, more then 3000 political opponents were arrested and 200 killed including former president Juan Jose Torres Gonzales. He was overthrown in another coup in 1978. In 1997 he was democratically elected to a five year term as president at age 71, but resigned in 2001 after being diagnosed with lung cancer.
