US Congressman. He was born one of nine children (he also had four brothers and four sisters) to Asa Abbott and his wife Hephzibah Abbott in Sidney, Maine. He was educated locally and later studied law at the prestigious Litchfield Law School in Litchfield, Connecticut. He was admitted to the bar in 1836 and commenced his practice of law in Calais, Maine. During this time he married Caroline Williams Belcher on June 26, 1836, in Belfast, Maine, and the couple would have six children together (three girls and three boys). He then moved to Columbus, Mississippi, in 1839, where he continued his practice of law until moving back to Maine the following year and settling first in Farmington, Maine, where he had lived previously and then Belfast, Maine. Upon returning to Maine he resumed his practice of law and then entered politics. He served as a Member of the Maine State House of Representatives from 1842 to 1846, and was a Delegate to the Republican National Convention that was held at the Musical Fund Hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from June 17, 1856, to June 19, 1856. He then decided to run for a seat in the United States Congress and was elected. A Member of the Republican Party, he then served Maine's 3rd District (Thirty-Fifth Congress) in the United States House of Representatives from March 4, 1857, to March 3, 1859. He was not a Candidate for reelection in 1858. After his term in the United States Congress expired he was succeeded in office by United States Representative Ezra Bartlett French on March 4, 1859. After leaving the United States Congress he resumed his practice of law. He lastly served as the Mayor of Belfast, Maine, for one term from 1865 to 1866, before once again returning to his practice of law until his death. He passed away in Belfast, Maine, on July 26, 1877, at the age of 73, from complications relating to Leontiasis ossea, a rare medical condition, characterized by an overgrowth of the facial and cranial bones. He was buried in the Grove Cemetery in Belfast, Maine. His wife Caroline passed away on June 17, 1883, at the age of 70, and she was buried with her husband.
