Statesman. He served as prime minister of the Caribbean island nation of Barbados, from January 2008 until his death. Elected to Parliament in 1987 as a member of St. John district, he rose to head the Democratic Labour Party (DLP), defeating incumbent Prime Minister Owen Arthur in the January 2008 elections. In addition to serving as prime minister, he also held the posts of Minister of Community Development and Culture from 1991 to 1998, and Minister of Finance from 1993 to 1994. He died at his private residence at the age of 48, following treatment for pancreatic cancer in the United States.
