Civil War Union Brigadier General. Born in South Kingstown, Rhode Island, he was member a the State Senate when appoint a Captain in the 2nd Rhode Island Infantry Regiment at the start of the Civil War. He participated in the 1st Battle of Bull Run and was promoted Colonel of the 4th Rhode Island Infantry distinguished himself for his gallantry in the Battle of New Berne and was promoted Brigadier General in April, 1862. During the Battle of Antietam on September 17, 1862, he led the 3rd Division of the IX Corps, was mortally wounded and died later in a field hospital.
