President of Bolivia. He served as the President of Bolivia for three different terms; from 1952 to 1956, from 1960 to 1964, and 1985 to 1989. Born Angel Victor Paz Estenssoro, he began his career as a professor of economics at the University of San Andres in La Paz and later served as an economic advisor to President German Busch. He was elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1939 and two years later, helped found the leftist political party National Revolutionary Movement (MNR). In 1952 the MNR seized power after the conservative Mamerto Urriolagotia government annulled the 1951 election in which the party had been successful. He became president and served for four years. During his first tenure, he extended the right to vote to Indians, expropriated the nation's three largest tin companies, and launched agrarian reform. After his first term, he served as ambassador to the United Kingdom from 1956 to 1960. In 1960 his party won a large victory and he became president for his second tenure, which lasted until 1964. During his second administration, the nation's tin industry was reorganized. In 1964 the MNR won another decisive victory, but before he could assume another term, he was overthrown by the military. He went into exile in Peru and remained there until 1971 when he came back to Bolivia to serve as an economic advisor to President Hugo Banzer Suarez. He was unsuccessful in a run for the presidency in 1979, but six years later, was elected president by Congress after an indecisive election. His third term, which lasted until 1989, saw him institute an economic program that led to hyperinflation in the country. After leaving office in 1989, he retired from politics.
