Spanish-American War Medal of Honor Recipient. He entered the U.S. Navy at New York. His citation reads: "On board the USS Nashville during the operation of cutting the cable leading from Cienfuegos, Cuba, 11 May 1898. Facing the heavy fire of the enemy, Eglit set an example of extradinary bravery and coolness throughout this action". He continued to serve in the Navy after the war and attained the rank of Chief Master At Arms. Eglit was lost at sea off the coast of Virginia when the ship on which he was a passenger, the steamer Monroe, collided with the Nantucket.
