Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. The nephew and namesake of powerful 19th century Senator Thomas Hart Benton, he had been an educator before the Civil War, serving as Iowa State Superintendent of Public Instruction. When the war began, he served as Colonel and commander of rhe 29th Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He was appointed military governor of Little Rock, Arkansas, where set up his headquarters at the home of a Confederate general Albert Pike, preventing the destruction of Pike's famous library. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on December 15, 1864.
