Actor. Born in in London, England, he was an English stage and film performer who found success in Hollywood and was one of the founding members of the Screen Actors Guild. After acting in London's West End, he came to the United States, where he toured the country with the Theater Guild from 1923 to 1929. He made his distinction on the big screen by appearing in three Sherlock Holmes movies "Sherlock Holmes" (1932), "A Study in Scarlet' (1933) and "Terror by Night" (1946). Among his many notable film credits are "My Man Godfrey" (1936), "The Mad Martindales" (1942), "My Darling Clementine" (1946), "Wagon Master " (1950) and "Around the World in Eighty Days" (1956). For television, he appeared on "Four Star Playhouse", "Maverick", "Dante", "The Beverly Hillbillies" and "The Flying Nun", just to name a few. He died in Hollywood, California, at age 72.
