Congolese President. Ngouabi served as the President of the Republic of the Congo from January 1, 1969 to March 18, 1977. He was born to a family of humble origins. In 1953, he entered military school and would serve in the military for the most of his life. In 1965 Ngouabi created the first battalion of paratroopers in the Congo Republic. He was first demoted in April 1966 for his leftist views and then arrested on July 29, 1968. His arrest provoked discontent among the military and on July 31, he was released by soldiers. On August 5, 1968, the National Revolutionary Council, which was headed by Ngouabi, was formed and by the end of the year, would be the country's supreme authority. After assuming office as President, he not only changed the country's name to the People's Republic of the Congo, but also declared it to be the first Marxist-Leninist state in Africa. After an attempted coup in February 1972, there was a series of opposition purges. On January 9, 1975, Ngouabi was sworn in for another term as President. He also signed an economic aid pact with the Soviet Union that same year. On March 18, 1977 Ngouabi was assassinated by an alleged suicide commando. March 18 was declared Marien Ngouabi Day in the Republic of Congo. The country's only public university is Marien Ngouabi University in Brazzaville.
