Algerian Political, Military Leader. Boumedienne served as the leader of Algeria from July 1965 to his passing in 1978. He was born Mohammed Ben Brahim Boukharouba and adopted the name Houari Boumedienne after joining forces with rebels seeking independence from France. Boumedienne became chief of staff of the National Liberation Front in 1960 and concentrated on building up the rebel forces. After a treaty was signed with France in March 1962, problems broke out among the Algerian rebel leaders. In September of 1962 Boumedienne occupied the capital of Algiers in support of Ahmed Ben Bella, who later became the first President of Algeria. He was named defense minister and vice president. In 1976 his government issued a new National Charter which led to a new constitution. Boumedienne also became a leading figure in the nonaligned movement. He passed away after receiving treatment for a rare blood disease.
