President of Pakistan. Ayub Khan was a military leader who served as president of Pakistan from 1958 to 1969. After college studies, he was commissioned an officer in the Indian army and served in the Second World War. After the partition of British India into India and Pakistan in 1947, Ayub Khan was quickly promoted in the new Pakistani army. In 1951 he became commander in chief of the army and then three years later, became minister of defense. Ayub Khan was appointed chief martial law administrator in 1958 after several years of unrest in the country. Soon after this he ousted the government and declared himself president. Ayub Khan brought about many reforms that were critical in the modern development of the country. He was elected president in a national referendum in 1960 and reelected in 1965. Also in 1965 war broke out between Pakistan and India over the Kashmir and Jammu regions and after two weeks of fighting, a ceasefire was agreed to and came to a boundary agreement. Both internal and external problems caused Ayub Khan to announce at the end of 1968 that he would not run for reelection. Riots in the country in early 1969 caused him to resign immediately and he was replaced by General Yahya Khan.
