Roman Catholic Cardinal. Bom Jesus do Amparo born Carlos Carmelo de Vasconcelos Motta received his initial studies at Fazenda da Prata and later at the Colégio Matosinhos of the Marist Brothers in Congonhas do Campo, before moving to the faculty of law of Belo Horizonte. Entering the Major Seminary of Mariana, he was ordained priest in the latter city on June 20, 1918. Vicar coadjutor of Taquaruçu for eleven months, he was named chaplain of Asilo São Lums da Serra da Piedade and later of the Recolhimento das Macaúbas. Serving in the parishes of Caeté and Sabará, he was named rector of seminary of Belo Horizonte, being named on October 23, 1925, Privy Chamberlain of His Holiness with the title of monsignor. Elected auxiliary bishop of the see of Diamantina by Pope Pius XI, he received his episcopal consecration with the titular see of Algiza on October 30, 1932 inside the church of São José of Belo Horizonte, he was promoted to the metropolitan see of São Luis do Maranhão on December 19, 1935 and later to metropolitan see of São Paulo on August 13, 1944. Establishing more than one hundred new parishes in the later archdiocese, Pope Pius XII created him cardinal priest in the consistory of February 18, 1946 with the title of San Pancrazio. Establishing the Paulista Faculty of Law, becoming thus, the initial nucleus of the Catholic University of São Paulo, in 1947, Pope Pius XII granted the said institute the rank of Pontifical University. The first president of the Episcopal Conference of the Bishops of Brazil from 1952 until 1958, on March 2, 1956, he founded Rádio Nove de Julho in commemoration of the eightieth birthday of the named Pius XII. Personally selecting the name Brasilia for the new federal capital city, he was transferred to the metropolitan see of Aparecida as its first archbishop on April 18, 1964, building the famous National Shrine of Nossa Senhora da Conceição do Aparecida, patroness of Brazil, which remains one of the most visited shrines in the Catholic world. Passing away in office on September 18, 1982 at 2.10 am., at the Santa Casa de Misericórdia of Aparecida of arteriosclerosis, his remains lies buried inside the same Aparecida basilica.
