Painter. Martiros Saryan was born to an Armenian family in Nor Nakhijevan (now part of Rostov-on-Don, Russian). At the turn of the 20th century he studied at the Moscow School of Arts and was heavily influenced by the work of artists such as Gauguin and Matisse. He traveled extensively through the Middle East starting in 1910 and in 1915 went to Etchmiadzin, Armenia to help refugees of the 1915 Armenian Genocide. He married his wife Lusik Agayan lived in Russia for a few years following the Russian Revolution before settling in Armenia in 1921. He began his career as a symbolist but gradually became more realist. In the difficult years of the 1930s he mainly devoted himself to landscape painting. He also did many portraits of numerous famous Armenian and Soviet figures. He was awarded the Order of Lenin three times, named a People's Artist of the USSR, and a Hero of Socialist Labor, amongst many other awards. His work is very bright and reflects the natural colors of the Armenian landscape. There is a museum and statue dedicated to him in the Armenian capital Yerevan.
