10th Chile President. He served as President of Chile from 1886 to 1891. During his presidency was founded the provinces of Malleco and Cautín, and Chile took possession of the Isla de Pascua (Easter Island). Eventually, his government gravitated into a dictatorship. President Jose Manuel Balmaceda sought sanctuary in the Argentinean embassy as he was having a serious disagreement about the budget with the congress. Facing the 1891 Civil War and while still at the embassy, the president committed suicide by shooting himself.
