Monarch of Austria. Descendant of the Habsburg dynasty, fourth son of Ferdinand II, he ascended the throne in a turbulent period in the history of Central Europe. Sovereign of Germany, Bohemia, and Hungary and archduke of Austria, on August 1, 1637, he was appointed elected emperor of the Romans or of the Holy Roman Empire. In 1648, he ended the exhausting Thirty Years War by signing the Treaty of Münster and Osnabrück also known as the Peace of Westphalia. Ferdinand III was a protector of the arts and an enthusiastic promulgator of Italian music and opera, as well as a self-taught composer.
