Austrian Monarch. Holy Roman Emperor, King of Bohemia, Hungary and Croatia and later also King of Sardinia and Sicily. Although he was elected King of Spain (as Charles III) he was only able to exercise his rule in Catalonia. When his brother died he had to return to Austria and later abandoned his rights to the Spanish crown. He abolished the male-only succession so that in case of no male heir a daughter could succeed. Since his only male descendant died as an infant, this case occurred after his death.
