Civil War Union Army Officer. Commissioned as a 1st Lieutenant in the 1st New Jersey Light Artillery, Battery A on July 27, 1861, serving until he resigned October 4, 1862. When Battery C of the 1st New Jersey Light Artillery was being recruited, he was first commissioned its 1st Lieutenant, but was advanced to Captain and commander of the unit when another officer could not be found (September 11, 1863). He led his artillery through all the Army of the Potomac's fighting in the Siege of Petersburg in 1864 and 1865. On March 25, 1865 his guns helped stem and ultimately repulsed the Confederates who breached the Union lines at Fort Stedman, Virginia (which was the last offensive move by the Army of Northern Virginia in Petersburg). He was brevetted Major, US Volunteers on December 2, 1864 for his services in the War.
