The following biography is gleaned from ' The Futrell Family Revised' , Roger H. Futrell author
Thomas Futerell came to Surry County, Virginia in 1676 (it is believed that he arrived from County Shropshire, England, however this fact has not been proven at this time) - Thomas was an indentured 'Christian servant' to Robert Ruffin whose land was located on the south side of the James River in the Lawnes Creek Parish area - Thomas' indenture was for 7 years; and following his time of indenture, Thomas briefly resided at the homeplace of his future father-in-law Thomas Jarrell.
In September of 1684, Thomas married Gilian 'Jarrell' Alderson (the widow of William Alderson); and following their marriage, Thomas became the legal guardian of Gilian's infant daughter Elizabeth - eventually Thomas and Gilian had children of their own (one being a son named Thomas, and another being William.) As to William, his relationship to Thomas and Gilian is suspected (however not proven) - William died around 1726/27 in St. Peter's Parish, a Parish which served both New Kent and James City Counties in Virginia.
Thomas Futerell died in Surry County, VA in 1693; his wife Gilian being appointed Administrator of his estate on April 11, 1693. It is also interesting to note that the inventory of his estate included farm implements, cattle, horses, hogs, household furnishings, and a 'small Bible' - the estate was recorded May 2, 1693. Thomas Sr. had also been a foot soldier in the militia.
