For seventeen seasons (1948 to 1964), he played at the quarterback position in the All-America Football Conference and National Football League with the Baltimore Colts, San Francisco 49ers and New York Giants. Born Yelberton Abraham Tittle, he made his initial impact on the football field during his years at Marshall High School in Texas. He enrolled at Louisiana State University and received MVP honors for the Cotton Bowl Game against Arkansas played in 1947. The contest known as the "Ice Bowl" ended in a 0-0 tie. Tittle went on to set multiple records by a quarterback at LSU. Selected by the Detroit Lions during the 1st round of the 1948 NFL Draft (6th overall pick), he ended up with the Baltimore Colts of the All-America Football Conference and remained with the team after they joined the NFL in 1950. He moved on to the San Francisco 49ers and established himself as one of the league's top quarterbacks, in the same class as contemporaries Norm Van Brocklin and Bobby Layne. After he was acquired by the Giants, he quarterbacked New York to three consecutive NFL Title Games (1961 to 1963). Individually, he received league MVP honors in 1963, Pro Bowl status seven-times and All Pro recognition three-times. During a game in 1964 against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Tittle suffered a concussion and cracked sternum after he was sacked. The image was captured in a famous photo. In 204 career regular season games, he compiled 33,070 passing yards and 242 touchdowns. After returning from football, he operated an insurance company in California. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1971. His uniform number 14 was retired by the New York Giants and additionally, he was named to the New York Giants Ring of Honor.
