Hall of Fame College Football Coach, Professional Football Coach. During his twenty-two year tenure (1958 to 1979) as head coach of the Arizona State University Sun Devils, he guided his teams to nine conference titles and six bowl game wins. He established Arizona State University as a prominent national collegiate program during the course of his career. Born in the small, Pennsylvania coal mining community of Windber, he distinguished himself as a player when he achieved All-American honors at the guard position during his years at Michigan State University. Following service with the United States Army, Kush began his lengthy coaching career, initially as an assistant with Dan Devine at Arizona State in 1958. In 1975, he received Coach of the Year honors. From 1982 until 1984, he served as head coach of the Baltimore Colts and remained with the franchise when they located to Indianapolis. Additionally, he served as head coach of Phoenix Outlaws of the United States Football League. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1995.
