Professional Basketball Player, Coach. Born George R. Irvine, he coached both the Indiana Pacers and Detroit Pistons of the National Basketball Association after a six year playing career in the American Basketball Association. He played basketball collegiately at the University of Washington where he was a first-team All Pac-8 selection in 1970. He was selected by both the Seattle SuperSonics of the NBA and the Virginia Squires of the ABA in their respective drafts and decided to play for the Squires. He played five seasons for them and then joined the Denver Nuggets for his final year as a player in 1976. After retiring as a player, he became an assistant coach for both the Nuggets and Indiana Pacers before being named the Pacers' head coach in 1984. He went on to serve two stints as their coach (1984-1986, 1988-1989). He would go on to serve as an assistant coach for the Pacers, Golden State Warriors, and Detroit Pistons before being named the Pistons' head coach in 2000. He served as their coach for one and a half years before being fired in 2001. His professional coaching record was 100 wins and 190 losses. He was inducted into the Pac-12 Basketball Hall of Honor during the 2012 Pac-12 Conference Men's Basketball Tournament. He passed away after a long battle with cancer.
