Major League Baseball Player. For seventeen seasons (1949 to 1965), he played at the first base and outfield positions with the St. Louis Browns, Washington Senators, Chicago White Sox and Philadelphia Phillies. Born Roy Edward Sievers, he excelled at baseball and basketball during his years at Beaumont High School in St. Louis, Missouri. During this period, he caught the attention of scouts for which resulted in his being signed as an amateur free agent by his hometown team, the St. Louis Browns in 1944. His Minor League career was delayed while he served as a Military Police officer with the United States Army. He made his Major League debut on April 21, 1949 and split time between center field and right field. He sported an impressive .306 batting average and a .398 on-base-percentage which resulted in his earning of the Rookie of the Year honors for the American League (1949). From 1951 to 1953, he struggled with injuries after dislocating his arm and shoulder which caused nerve damage. However, he overcame this and established himself as one of baseball's premier run producers during his era. In 1957 while with the Senators, he yielded a career-high 42 home runs and 114 RBIs, as he led the league in both those categories. The following season (1958), he belted 39 home runs and drove in 108. After stints with the White Sox, Phillies and the latter Washington Senators' franchise, he retired as a player in 1965. In 1,887 regular season games, he compiled 1,703 hits, 318 home runs and 1,147 RBIs, with a lifetime .267 batting average. Sievers achieved all star status in 1956, 1957, 1959 and 1961. He went on to serve as a coach with the Cincinnati Reds in 1966 and later served as a Minor League manager with the New York Mets' and Oakland Athletics' organizations. He was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in 1992.
