Major League Baseball Player. Born Hubert Max Lanier, he player Major League Baseball as a pitcher for fourteen seasons (1938 to 1946, 1949 to 1953) with the St. Louis Cardinals, New York Giants and St. Louis Browns. He was a member of three National League Pennant-winning teams (1942 to 1944 Cardinals), two World Championship teams (1942, 1944 Cardinals), and two National League All-Star teams (1943 and 1944). In seven World Series game appearances, he won 2 games and lost 1 game, and had 1.71 ERA in 31 innings pitched. In 327 career regular season games, Lanier won 108 and lost 82 with a lifetime 3.01 ERA. His son Hal Lanier is a former major league player and manager.
