Following his graduation, he served as an assistant classics master at Wyggeston School in Leicester. He earned his Master's degree from Cambridge and found a position at a grammar school. In 1975, he penned his first "Inspector Morse" novel titled "The Last Bus to Woodstock" and over the next twenty-four years, he wrote twelve more books to the series. The character was made into a long-running TV series (1987 to 2000) which starred John Thaw as "Inspector Morse". In 2000, Dexter was given the Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his contributions to Literature.
