Actress. She was trained at the Actors Studio and made her professional debut in the Broadway production "In the Summer House" (1953 to 1954). During this period, she began her lengthy association with television and created strides for Hispanic performers, as she appeared on such programs as "Peter Gunn," "Mike Hammer," "State Trooper," "Tales of Wells Fargo" and many others. Her motion picture roles include performances opposite Marlon Brando in "One-Eyed Jacks" (1961) and "The Appaloosa" (1966). She also had co-starring roles in such pictures as "Thunder Island" (1963) and "Back Roads" (1981). She will perhaps be remembered by movie audiences for playing 'Mama Montana' in the film "Scarface" (1983). She was identifiable with several soap operas which include "The Edge of Night" and "Guiding Light." In 1967, she co-founded the Puerto Rican Traveling Theater Company. She died of complications from a pulmonary infection.
