Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He was commissioned as 1st Lieutenant and Regimental Adjutant of the 2nd Colorado Volunteer Cavalry on September 14, 1862. Promoted to Major, he would be tabbed by Brigadier General Daniel Ullmann to serve on his staff as an Action Assistant Inspector General. On January 28, 1864 he was commissioned as Lieutenant Colonel of the 65th United States Colored Infantry, and served with the unit until well after the Civil War was over. Assigned to occupation duty in Louisiana, he was mustered out of the Volunteer service until January 8, 1867. Two months later he as commissioned into the United States Regular Army, serving until his honorable discharged in 1870 as a Captain. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services".
