For nine seasons (1971 to 1980), he played at the defenseman position in the National Hockey League with the Boston Bruins, California Golden Seals, Cleveland Barons, St. Louis Blues and Pittsburgh Penguins. He played hockey while attending high school, prior to beginning his career with the Oshawa Generals junior team of the Ontario Hockey League during the 1967-1968 season. Selected by the Boston Bruins as the number 13 overall pick during the 1970 NHL Amateur Draft, he totaled 575 career-regular season games. During the course of his career, Stewart became know for his aggressive checking skills. He was involved in contract negotiations between the NHL players union and with the league, when he served as a player representative.
