Vernon Thomson for the 3rd District seat from Wisconsin, becoming the first Democrat to serve the district in 66 years. He served in the House of Representatives until 1981, after being defeated by Republican Steve Gunderson in the 1980 general election. A champion of safety and community, he worked to pass legislation that designated areas of Wisconsin to be wilderness, enabled farmer’s markets and direct sale of farm goods to consumers, established milk price supports, and regulated matters of agricultural safety. In 1988 he was elected to serve his second stint in the Wisconsin State Assembly and served until 1996.
