Professional Basketball Player. For six seasons (1988 to 1990, 1991 to 1993, 1994 to 1995 and 1998 to 1999), he played at the center and power-forward positions in the National Basketball Association with the New Jersey Nets, Philadelphia 76ers, Minnesota Timberwolves and Charlotte Hornets. Born Charles Edward Shackleford, he attended Kinston High School in North Carolina and later played collegiate basketball at North Carolina State University. While with the Wolfpack, under head coach Jim Valvano, he distinguished himself as the conference leader in rebounding, which earned him All-ACC status. Shackleford's collegiate years were marred however, when he was linked (along with other players) to a point-shaving scandal. Selected by New Jersey during the 2nd round of the 1988 NBA Draft, he totaled 303 career regular season games. In addition to the NBA, he played professionally in Europe with Greece, Turkey and Italy. Following his playing career, he had run-ins with the law and was once arrested for selling prescription medication.
