Opera Singer. A comprimario tenor at the Metropolitan Opera, appearing 718 times between 1924 and 1940. He sang in the first Met performances of Der Barbier von Bagdad, I Gioiello della Madonna, La Cena delle Beffe, La Vida Breve, Le Rossignol, The King's Henchman (World Premiere), Violanta, Sadko, The Fair at Sorochintzy, Le Preziose Ridicole, Boccaccio, Schwanda, the Bagpiper, Donna Juanita, Merry Mount (World Premiere), Caponsacchi, and the World Premiere of Puccini's Turandot, in which he created the role of the Emperor Altoum. He can be heard in recordings of broadcast performances of La bohème, Lakmé, Salome, and Manon. Following his retirement from the Met, he worked as a noted vocal pedagogue.
