Author. His hometown was Butrimonys, Stakliškės, attended Stakliškės primary school year from 1897 to 1900, graduated from Realschule Gymnasium (high school)and then entered the Vilnius Theological Seminary in 1905 and graduated but was never ordained. While living in Vilnius and Kaunas, he worked on various newspapers. He used the pen name of "Stakliškės Liudas". From 1906 to 1907, he was the editor of the newspaper "The Lithuanian". He actively participated in the development of Lithuanian Science Society. In 1907, he was elected to President of the Great Vilnius Seimas, and from 1909 to 1910, he attended acting classes at Vilnius Music School. With H. Dirse, he established a publishing company in 1914 and published articles about Polish-Lithuanian relations; the first Lithuanian literary magazine, "Rainbow"; and literary almanac,"Lighthouse". Politically, he was a founder of the Lithuanian Populists' Union; a member of Lithuanian Christian Democratic Party; and in the aftermath of World War I, he joined the Lithuanian army, but was jailed by the Bolsheviks during the Lithuanian–Soviet War for six months. He was active in cultural and political life, gradually shifting towards communism in 1930s He was one of the 20-member delegation sent to petition the Soviet Union to accept the newly proclaimed Lithuanian SSR into the union. His son, Vytautas Sirijos Gira, is also a known poet and writer. He served as Assistant Commissar of Education until occupation by Nazi Germany in June 1941. Gira fled to the Russian SFSR and joined the 16th Rifle Division. After the war he returned to Lithuania, became a full member of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences and was recognized as the People's Poet
