Comedian. Born Ma Shuhuai, he pioneered comic dialogues relating to the Traditional and New China. In 1956, he joined the Central Broadcasting Recitation and Ballad Troupe as a professional Xiangsheng actor. He soon became a popular regular on Chinese Central Television and performed annually on CCTV's Lunar New Year variety show. Pudgy and with big ears, he was best known as a talented mimic and quick with puns. He innovated an English-Chinese Crosstalk art form focusing on the absurdities of China's rapid modernization and other social changes. He set great store in China's comic and theoretical research of Xiangsheng to make his creations more socially relevant. His books include Selected Xiangsheng and An Informal Discussion on the Art of Xiangsheng. He was also host of the international distributed Spring Festival TV program on CCTV. He died of a heart attack.
