United States Senator. He served in the United States Senate from the state of Utah from January 3, 1993 to January 3, 2011. He was the son of former United States Senator Wallace Foster Bennett. He earned his B.S. Degree from the University of Utah in 1957 and afterwards joined the Army National Guard where he served until 1960. After leaving the military, he was employed at his family's paint and glass business until joining his father's re-election campaign in 1962. He later went to work in Washington for both his father and Congressman Sherman P. Lloyd. In 1965 he went to work for J.C. Penney Company, but four years later, joined the Nixon Administration as director of congressional affairs in the Transportation Department. In 1970 he bought a public relations firm and for the next twenty years, was part of the business world. In 1992, when Senator Jake Garn decided to retire, he ran for his father's old Senate seat as a Republican and won. He served in the United States Senate until 2011 after being defeated for re-nomination at the Utah State Republican Convention by Mike Lee. During his tenure in the Senate, he served as a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, where he secured federal funding to create both the TRAX and FrontRunner public transportation systems and was the ranking member on the Senate Banking Committee, and Chairman of the Joint Economic Committee. He was widely respected by his colleagues on both sides of the aisle. He passed away after a battle with pancreatic cancer.
