Roman Catholic Cardinal. Ambanitsilena-Ranomasina born Victor Razafimahatratra entered the Society of Jesus in 1945 after frequenting the Major Seminary of Fianarantsoa, being ordained priest July 28, 1956 following studies at the Theological Faculty and the Catechetical Center Lumen Gentium in Brussels. Rector of the Minor Seminary of Fianarantsoa between 1960 and 1963 when he was elected superior of the Jesuit residence of Amboistra, he served as rector of the Major Seminary of Fianarantsoa from 1969 until 1971, when he was elected bishop of Farafangana. Receiving his episcopal consecration on April 18, 1971 in Fianarantsoa, he was elected president of the Episcopal Conference of Madagascar in 1974 and was named archbishop of Tananarive on April 10, 1976, vacated with the sudden death of Cardinal Jérôme Louis Rakotomalala in November of the previous year. Pope Paul VI created him cardinal priest in the consistory of May 24, 1976 with the title Santa Croce in Gerusalemme. With the name of his see changed to to Antananarivo on October 28, 1989, the Cardinal died while still in office at 72 years of age.
