Queen of Poland and Sweden. She was originally Archduchess-Princess of Austria, Duchess of Styria there, belonged to the Habsburg Dynasty and became the first consort of King Sigmund III in 1592. Her private nickname was "Andle". In six years, she bore five children of whom a son and all three daughters died young. She was Queen of both countries for seven years, from the year of her marriage until her death, and thus missed by a year her husband's official dethronement in Sweden in 1599. All their children had been born Princes and Princesses of Poland and Sweden. As a member of the powerful European imperial dynasty, Anne had a good education, a strict Catholic one, and was able to speak fluent Latin at an early age. Pope Clement VIII himself decided that she was to marry Sigmund. Though it was politically motivated, the royal marriage is said to have been a cooperative and happy one, except for the fact that Queen Anne didn't like Sweden. When she went up there with the King in 1593 for their Swedish coronation at Upsala Cathedral, she found the ancient Three Crowns Castle in Stockholm uncomfortable and complained that Dowager Queen Gunnilda of Sweden, the King's stepmother, had "removed the bare necessities". She also lost one of her baby daughters there after rough travel. Anne was treated with disdain by the leading (protestant) Swedish clergy and found their coronation ceremonial boring. She played an active part in political intrigue on behalf of Polish interests and was rightfully suspicious of King Sigmund's tough viceroy uncle (later King Carl IX of Sweden). The queen also refused to allow her son to be brought up in Sweden, which led to his losing his status of Crown Prince there and eventually becoming King of Poland only (as Wladislaw IV). Queen Anne died due to complications in childbirth and so did the second son she had just given birth to. She was only twenty-five. The king married her sister Constance five years later.
