Roman Catholic Cardinal. German born Josef Clemens Maurer entered the Congregation of Most Holy Redeemer at an early age and making his novitiate at Trois-Epis in Switzerland, professed his vows on September 10, 1921. Ordained priest on September 19, 1925, he soon moved to Bolivia where he served as longtime superior of the Redemptorist residence of La Paz between 1926 and 1947. Vice-provincial of his congregation for South America between 1947 and 1950, on March 1 of the latter year Pope Pius XII elected him auxiliary for the archdiocese of La Paz, receiving his episcopal consecration in Rome on the following April 16 from Cardinal Giovanni Adeodato Piazza OCD. Promoted to the metropolitan see of Sucre on October 27, 1951, he was created cardinal priest by Pope Paul VI in the consistory of June 26, 1967, receiving the title of Santissimo Redentore e Sant'Alfonso in Via Merulana, becoming thus the first ordinary in Bolivia to be raised to the Sacred College.
