Following his discharge, he landed a position with Columbia Pictures and in 1960, he penned his first novel "Welcome to Hard Times." Among his other works include "Loon Lake" (1980), "World's Fair" (1985), "The Waterworks" (1994) and "The March" (2005). He died of complications from lung cancer.
