Author. He will be remembered for his bestselling works on historical fiction, notably "The Book of Daniel" (1971), "Ragtime" (1975) and "Billy Bathgate" (1989), all of which became motion picture adaptations. In addition, "Ragtime" became a highly-successful Broadway play. Born Edgar Lawrence Doctorow, to Jewish parents, he graduated from Kenyon College and briefly attended Columbia University, prior to serving with the United States Army during the Korean War. Following his discharge, he landed a position with Columbia Pictures and in 1960, he penned his first novel "Welcome to Hard Times." Among his other works include "Loon Lake" (1980), "World's Fair" (1985), "The Waterworks" (1994) and "The March" (2005). He died of complications from lung cancer.
