President of Uruguay. Batlle Berres served as President of Uruguay from 1947 to 1951 and chief executive officer from 1953 to 1954. He was a nephew of former president Jose Batlle y Ordonez. The early part of his political career saw Batlle Berres serve in Uruguay's Chamber of Deputies. Originally elected vice president in 1946, he assumed the presidency upon the death of Tomas Berreta the next year. Batlle Berres' administration attracted huge amounts of foreign investment into the country. After Uruguay adopted a nine man council for their executive branch, he became the head of the council from 1953 to 1954 and remained a member until 1959. Batlle Berres also owned a newspaper and radio station. His son Jorge Batlle Ibanez became President of Uruguay in 2000.
