13th Prime Minister of Norway. He served as Prime Minister of Norway from February 20, 1912 to January 31, 1913, representing the Conservative Party. He was succeeded by the Liberal Party candidate Gunnar Knudsen, who was starting his second term. Defense politics was a major issue for Bratlie in his years as Member of the Storting and prime minister. He graduated from the Military High School in 1880, trained as an army officer, and reaching the rank of Major General by 1911. He studied law at the University of Kristiania in Oslo, becoming a lawyer in 1885. He held the position of the Ministry of Defense until 1893, Commissioner General of War in 1898 and Advocate General of the Army in 1906. Early in his career, he was successful as a pioneer in developing the Norwegian wood processing industry, being on the board of the Norwegian State Railways, and the use of hydropower in the wood industry. During World War I, he was active in gaining grain imports. Bratlie remained chairman of the Conservative Party's central board in 1919, but was not nominated for re-election. In 1925 he participated in the founding of Fedrelandslaget, "the Patriotic Association", and was member of its board in during the organization's most active years. All his life he was marked by the rural conservatism of his childhood. Although his military career helped him in his politics, he was left an outsider in some social circles with his rural ways. He never married. He was decorated Commander of the Order of Saint Olav in 1897 and the Danish Order of Dannebrog, and Knight of the Swedish Order of the Polar Star.
