Singer. An icon of Arabic music, she used good looks, a powerful voice, and an over-the-top personality to carve out a six decade career. Born Jeanette Gergis Al-Feqhali to a Lebanese Christian family, she was attractive from the time she was a little girl and made her 1938 silver screen bow in "The Clock Strikes Seven". Taking the single name "Sabah" ("Morning") for the stage, she began appearing in a succession of mostly Egyptian films that eventually totaled around 100, establishing herself as a major star with 1945's "The Heart Has its Reasons". She was seen in "Miss Mom", "Love Street", 1959's "Ataba Square", and the 1964 "Velvet Hands" while building a musical career that saw her use her repertoire of roughly 3,500 songs in more than 50 albums and countless live concerts, along the way becoming the first Arab artist to sing at Paris' Olympia, the Piccadilly of London, New York's Carnegie Hall, and the Sydney Opera House. Her shows were big events in which she was always called upon for such of her signature pieces as "Your Love is Like Honey on My Heart", "They Took the Wind", and "From the Magic of Your Eyes", and though she attracted behind-the back laughter for her bleached hair and multiple plastic surgeries as well as a measure of scorn in the Moslem world for her suggestive lyrics, skimpy outfits, and colorful private life that included 10 or so marriages and a string of romances with younger men, she remained popular with an adoring fan base. Sabah continued her movie, stage, and recital career, earned her final film credit with 2005's "Bosta", received multiple honors, among them a statue in Beirut and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Dubai International Film Festival, lived out her days in Beirut, and died of chronic circulatory problems. A number of her movies are preserved on DVD and many of her albums are available on CD.
