Unable to serve in the United States Military during World War II, due to a medical condition, he attained his degree in Law from the University of Kansas and served as an aid to former Kansas Governor and Federal Judge Walter A. Huxman. Anderson launched his political career, when he was elected to and served in the Kansas State Senate from 1956 until 1961. During his governorship tenure, he upheld the state's pro death penalty stance and prioritized efforts to fund education and consolidate districts. Anderson was a passionate advocate for Civil Rights. After leaving the political arena, he resumed practicing law.
