Jonas Schrift, son of Nussin (Nathan) Schrift (the son of Hirsch Schrift and Keyle Bornfeld) and Chana Schonholz, emigrated from Grymalow, Austria, marrying his third cousin Rose Winter in America. They lived in St. Louis, Missouri at that time. He and Rose had two daughters, Blanche and Shirley.

Jonas moved the young family to New York in the 1920s, so that he, a tailor's cutter, could find steadier work closer to the city's garment industry. Jonas was a designer of men's clothing. With dreams of becoming a millionaire, Jonas moved the young family to Brooklyn, New York in the late 1920s, and opened a haberdashery shop, only to see his dreams go up in smoke one Christmas right in the middle of the Depression. Because Jonas had five thousand dollars worth of insurance, the authorities were convinced it was arson. Around 1929/1930 he was tried, convicted and jailed for arson. Rose spent the next year courageously picking up the pieces of their lives; she worked ten to twelve hour days, did her best to raise the girls, moved to a cheaper apartment over a relative's butcher shop, carried on her legal battles with the State of New York and visited her husband at Sing Sing. Finally, after spending a year in prison, a new trial exonerated Jonas, but the damage had been done. His dreams of success had been destroyed.

An indictment charging arson in the second degree was returned against Jonas Schrift of 90-38 of 170th street, Jamaica.

Schrift is alledged to have set fire to his haberdashery store at 171-03 Jamaica avenue, Jamaica on the night of November 29, last, after insuring his stock and fixtures for $ 10,000.

Fire Department officials charged that the merchandise was worth but $ 1,500.
