Singer. Called the "Queen of Keroncong", she was one of her country's most popular vocalists over a long career. The child of a noted musical family, she was born and raised in what was then British Malaya, showed her talent early, and, against much paternal opposition, began performing at 14. Quickly becoming adept at Keroncong, a distinctive Malay folk music quite popular in the 1960s and 1970s, she became a regular on radio and television and was much in demand as a concert artist, always called upon for her signature piece "Sayang di Sayang" ("Lover is Loved") as well as for such other hits as "Hati ke Hati" ("Heart to Heart"). Tina released a number of singles and 1968 recorded her eponymous debut album which contained "You Only Live Twice", from the James Bond film of that name, sung in perfect English. Liked by audiences and respected by colleagues, she could be 'difficult' as she was rather particular as to whom she would allow to sing 'her' music, though she demanded as much from herself as she did everyone else, even serving as her own costumer to make sure that her appearance was always up to her standards. Tina cut back her schedule from the early 1980s on but performed on stage as late as 2013; her honors were many and included a 2009 Gold Prime Award and a 2010 Artistic Excellence Award. She died of ovarian cancer with which she had been ill since 2010. At her demise much of her recorded legacy remained available.
