Sportsman. He was considered by many to be the greatest ever motorcycle road racer of all time. Born in Ballymoney, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, in 1969 he started his racing career on Irish road circuits. His greatest successes were on the formidable Isle of Man TT circuit, where he won 26 times, a record that still stands today. He was awarded the MBE in 1986 for his services to motorcycle sport and in 1996 he was awarded an OBE for his outstanding humanitarian work for children in Romanian orphanages (he would load up his race transporter and deliver clothing and food to the trouble spots in Bosnia and Romania). As he never publicized his charity work, few knew about it. He died at the age of 48 at the Pirita-Kose-Kloostrimetsa public road course near Tallinn, Estonia whilst leading the 125cc race (he had already won the 750cc and 600cc events) when he appeared to lose control in the west road and collided with trees. His funeral service at the Garryduff Presbyterian Church, Ballmoney, was attended by a great crowd of mourners.
