World War II United States Naval Officer. He was the weaponeer aboard World War II B-29 "Bock's Car", which dropped the atomic bomb on the city of Nagasaki, Japan in August 1945. Born in Massachusetts, he was a 1933 graduate of the United States Naval Academy. With the United States entry into World War II, he was assigned to the Manhattan Project and the construction of the atom bomb. On August 9, 1945, three days after the bombing of Hiroshima, Ashworth was assigned on board the "Bock's Car", which was set to drop the second atomic bomb. His chief job was to arm the weapon. The bomb was ultimately dropped on the Japanese city of Nagasaki and Japan would surrender a few days later on August 15, 1945. He retired from the Navy as a Vice Admiral in 1968.
