Professional Football (Soccer) player. The son of a Belfast, Ireland shipyard worker he became one of Europe's most famous footballers. At the age of seventeen he made his professional debut with the Manchester United. He led his team to the English championships in 1965 and 1967 but his greatest triumph came when, in 1968, he led the United to England's first European Cup championship. Later that year he was named England's 'Footballer of the Year' and the "European Player of the Year". During his ten year tenure with Manchester he scored one hundred and seventy-eight goals in four hundred sixty-six games. He left the United in 1974 and went on to play for teams in the United States, Australia, Scotland, Ireland and again in England, before retiring in 1983. He was dubbed the "fifth Beatle" by the British media because of his hairstyle and fame. At the height of his popularity fans would send over ten thousand letters a week. He died due to liver complications caused by a lifelong struggle with alcoholism.
